Why are job descriptions so important?
The answer to this is because job descriptions provide clear, unambiguous guidelines to staff, indicating exactly what is expected of them in their current role within the company.
Without a job description, or with vague, ever-changing job descriptions, employees are never really sure where they should be focusing their attention, resulting in a reactive, goalless workforce.
Employees who do not have clear job descriptions are also more likely to become resentful of their management, whom they feel may be piling on more work than their current positions warrant. Of course with no job description it is difficult for the employee to back up this claim, which leads to further dissatisfaction and often results in these employees seeking alternative opportunities.
According to co-owner of the Business Success Centre in America Daniel Diener, giving employees job descriptions is one of the top things a company can do to ensure that they keep their best employees.
