What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming can be used to change your perception of problems
Most of us have heard of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). But what is it exactly?

NLP is an approach to human communications and self-development that helps you to modify your thoughts and behavioural patterns to suit your projected goals. In other words, NLP assumes that by changing how you think, you can change what you think.

NLP is therefore a method of changing or re-programming your mind in order to accomplish your objectives, not as it has sometime been promoted, or satirised by Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory, as a method to programme other people, like Pavlov's dog, to be more open to your suggestions and agenda. (Having said that, NLP will increase your confidence, help you to learn faster, improve your relationships, and achieve your goals, whatever they are.)

NLP mostly covers aligning yourself with your mission, eliminating your fears and phobias, creating relationships and self-esteem, and achieving peak performance through a process of self-mastery, visualization and recreation.

NLP has a lot to do with self-confidence and is therefore an important part of leadership. NLP has for a long time formed an integral part of Staff Training's approach to motivation and self-actualisation for our delegates. A number, if not all our courses work with this powerful and controlled approach to problems, assisting our delegates to move more and more strongly toward creation of solutions.

What follows is an example of a small and easy NLP tool to use when faced with every day small annoyances and unpleasant experiences...a tool that changes your mindset….

Step 1

Imagine the annoyance/problem/trigger to anger or frustration

Step 2

Imagine how this could play out and how you would feel, react, what you would do

Step 3

Select a song or piece of music that is the complete opposite to your imagined reaction in Step 2 and play this in your head while again thinking through the annoyance/problem.

Had fun? How did this change your perception of the problem?
