For people who are new to leadership it is comforting to know that the challenges you're coming up against are challenges that all new leaders have had to face. What this means is that there is therefore plenty of literature, self-help guides and lists of tips (just like this one) available to help you smooth over the transition and become a great leader.
Without any further ado, let's get into those tips for New Leaders…
1. Don't be afraid to seek help!
Often new leaders mistakenly believe that now that they're at the top, it's a sign of weakness to ask for help when they aren't sure. This is actually a strength! Expecting to have all the answers just because you're now a leader is the mistake.
2. Take the time to get to know your team
How you lead will depend on the individuals you are charged with leading. Leadership is fluid. It changes from person to person and what is effective with this person probably won't be effective with another person. This is why it's so important to take the time to get to know and understand the people that make up your team.
3. Understand the difference between manager and leader
Your task as leader is to inspire, encourage, motivate, and grow your team. The task of a manager is to control, discipline and focus on targets etc. In the simplest of terms a leader focuses on the people while a manager focuses on the task. Always remember to keep your focus on the people - you should essentially be trying to create new leaders out of your team, or at least getting your team members to flourish.
4. Communicate more
No matter how much you communicate right now, you need to be communicating more! Being a good communicator is among the most important traits a leader can have. Successful communication also leads to better relationships, whilst poor communication is one of the top causes of relationship breakdown.
5. Learn to lead by example
Ever heard the saying, "It's not what you say, it's what you do that matters"? This is especially relevant when it comes to teams. Remember that you are the role model. Your behaviour sets the baseline for what is acceptable and what is not. If you want your team to exhibit certain traits then you should be prepared to adjust your behaviour accordingly as well.
