The theory of the Enneagram is that there exist nine basic personality types, with each of us naturally adopting one of them. We live our lives rather habitually, according to our personality type, and typically we get on just fine. However, when the stresses of life become too much our normal ways of coping break down and our thinking patterns and actions become less and less productive, and in extreme cases even potentially dangerous.
With an understanding of your personality type and its various sub-types, however, you become aware of your habitual patterns and learn to stop yourself when negative patterns arise. Through this you become able to avoid reacting in negative ways to stress and breakdowns in your routine.
What is important to remember about the Enneagram is that it is not a tool that "boxes" people, but rather one that shows you the box you're in and then shows you the way to get out of it.
