It certainly impacts the way we are perceived. Even if we’re brilliant at what we do, the packaging counts and comes in many different variations.
If you work at an advertising agency, they’re likely to be more comfortable with a more funky look than, for instance, a firm of accountants. However, no matter how liberal your company is with regard to your personal grooming there are definite do’s and don’ts. In other words, you dress for yourself, to project the right image and reap the benefit that flows from looking professional.
Once again, I understand that dress codes vary. I fully understand the thinking behind this, but at no time, unless you're helping to move office, do scruffy denims, washed out T-Shirts, tons of make-up or bright red talons fit into the workplace.
For instance, I work a lot from home and I know that I feel completely different once I’ve showered and changed into working clothes. When I sit down at my desk, I’m sub-consciously projecting the professional me rather than the ‘at home’ me. It influences my speech patterns, my confidence, my thought processes – effectively, it puts me into working mode.
The way we look affects us – whether we like it or not. I don’t advocate everyone wearing business suits or having plastic surgery to achieve that Miss/Mr World look. It’s most definitely not about being a blond bimbo or muscled Mr Universe. It really is not and I can’t stress this enough. It’s about looking professional and ready to face your day. It’s about self-respect verses fashion victim. It’s about feeling good about yourself, because that determines how you interact with colleagues or clients. Have you donned your armour? Well then, you’re ready for the day!
So I put it to you – our presentation is a very powerful tool to use when we simply aren’t feeling it. One we easily overlook, to our own detriment.
Therefore, I’m going to answer my own question in the affirmative. Retail therapy is absolutely real, especially when undertaken with an honest, cappuccino loving friend! Go forth and have fun!
