How to improve staff retention
How to improve staff retention
Once the investment of staff training has been made in your organisation your biggest challenge then becomes that of retaining these skills and skilled workers.

It's no good spending money and time on skilling employees if these staff members walk out the door two months down the line, taking these hard-earned skills with them. In fact, it's a highly counterproductive and expensive exercise to put your company through, wouldn't you agree?

Fortunately with a bit of effort from our side as managers we are able to ensure that the above scenario doesn't happen.

Here are a few ways in which we can achieve this:

Create an incentive/bonus package for staff.

Incentives and bonuses are a great way of keeping employees motivated and constantly striving to achieve their best. When done correctly these kinds of programmes can be highly effective, but there should be considerable planning to ensure its successful and fair implementation.

General perks.

It's not all about money. For many staff it will be the smaller, less significant (to you) things that make them want to stay. Free lunches on Fridays, flexible work hours, medical aid etc. are some examples of general perks that many staff find very attractive.

Create clear career paths for staff.

Having an idea of how the succession plan for the company looks can be very motivating for employees. If your staff do not have succession plan or career path, have one drawn up now. (Check out Staff Training's free HR Resources for examples.)

Continuously improve.

Find out what's keeping your veteran employees put. Conduct interviews to ascertain the reasons for them joining the company in the first place, and what has kept them since. Implement your findings in your employee-retention programme.

Ensure good communication.

And this means good communication all round, from the lowliest employee right up to the big boss. Ensure that the vision and mission of the organisation are clearly communicated to all staff to facilitate the working towards a common goal.

Continuously train and skill your staff.

Companies who show an interest in their staff and their staff's skills have the most fulfilled employees. Fulfilled employees in turn lead to higher productivity. Skilling workers not only when the need arises for the company but on an ongoing basis gives many staff a very good reason to hang around, knowing that they will not stagnate in their position - something which happens all too often in larger companies.
