Thanks to technology we communicate more often and easier and platforms such as social media have largely contributed to a possible sloppy and more informal way of writing.
The business world is a professional world and normally we dress with care to impress our colleagues and clients and keep it professional. The success of an individual as well of the success of a company can also depend on their business writing skills.
Tips for better business writing:
1. Your message should be clear: ask yourself, who is my audience, what is the purpose of this message and what would I like the outcome to be. This will help you to write a clear and understandable message.
2. Be concise as nobody has time to waste. Avoid long complicated sentences and explanations.
3. Revise your spelling, grammar and punctuation. Incorrect spelling is a fatal mistake as it makes you appear unprofessional and careless.
4. Be courteous and polite. Never be rude, sexist, discriminating or angry in you writing. Also make sure that you have not misspelled your reader's name, surname or title.
5. State your request/opinion clearly and convincingly. The reader will be confused if you are ambiguous or unsure in your message.
6. Before sending off your message/letter please read through it. Your business writing is a crucial selling/marketing technique.
